Money

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Financing your studies requires good calculation and, ideally, early planning.

On average, students need about 1,000 euros a month for their living expenses. This includes costs for rent, food, clothing, teaching materials, free time, etc.

There are no tuition fees in this sense (with the exception of long-term tuition fees). But as a student you have to pay a semester fee to your university every semester. (In Hanover, this is between 380 and 450 Euros).

As a rule, student financing is always a mixture of financing. It can consist of parental alimony, jobbing, BAföG, scholarships or loans (although these always have to be well thought out). You can apply for BAföG here - or get advice on alternative financing options.

An application can always be worthwhile. There was a reform as recently as WS 2022/2023. Now more students will get more money. Above all by increasing the exemption amounts for parental income. Don't think: »My parents earn too much anyway«. Just try it out. We will support you!

TIP: Keep a budget book, digital or analog, it helps you keep track of your finances!

Living

Whether in a shared apartment, alone or still at home - there are many options for living and some things to consider when you move out from home for the first time.

Think about how you want to live: alone, in a shared apartment, with friends or with your parents.

Search on various online portals (for example WG-gesucht or classifieds). Are you from Hanover or do you have contacts in the city? Then ask your friends and acquaintances. Or apply for a place in a student dormitory. Start looking for an apartment as early as possible, the housing market in Hanover is tight.

It all depends. On average, students pay around 410 Euros a month in rent (according to the 22nd Social Survey), the average rent in our dormitories is 318 Euros a month. Commercial student housing is much more expensive. Here, the monthly rents are from 500 Euros upwards. Rent is the most expensive factor in the cost of living.

Apply for a place in our dormitories via our website. Unfortunately, we have far too few places for all students and always a long waiting list (waiting time from fourteen to eighteen months).

Congratulations! Remember to re-register. To do this, you need to make an appointment in person at the Bürgeramt of your place of residence. You can make the appointment online on the city's service portal. There you will also find the documents you need to bring with you.

If you are moving into a new apartment, make a note of the current meter readings for your gas and electricity bills and report them to your energy provider/landlord.

Also, don't forget to give your new address to the BAföG office if you have already applied and also inform your insurance companies, banks, etc.

And what about...

Your finances and where you will live during your studies are settled? Great! But there are also many other questions. Don't worry, we know our way around!

Insurance can be useful or even necessary. Whether liability, household or health insurance. Here you will find all the important information about insurance. Our social consultants will be happy to help you.

The monthly broadcasting licence fee must be paid in every household in Germany. It doesn't matter if you are a student or not. If you receive BAföG, you can be exempted.

There are many contact points that can support you if you have worries, needs or fears. If you have financial worries, or if you are studying with children or a disability, or if you are coming from abroad and need more support, our social counselors are the right people to contact. In addition, the universities also have various institutions that can help you. For example, the Psychological-Therapeutic Counseling Center of Leibniz Universität Hannover (which is there for all students).
