Housing Benefits ("Wohngeld")

Housing benefits are a federal accommodation allowance that enables people with a low income to live in adequate accommodation.

In general, international students who have received a residence permit for educational purposes are not entitled to housing benefits.

In particular cases students may be eligible for housing benefits, even if they receive a BAföG student loan/grant. Students may be eligible for housing benefits if their child is entitled to an accommodation allowance. If this is the case, the share of rent is deducted from the BAföG student loan/grant amount. However, if the child receives social allowance benefits and the parents are entitled to a BAföG student loan/grant, it is not possible to get a housing benefit.

If you think you or your child might be eligible for housing benefits, please go to the Studentenwerk's Social Advice Centre for in-depth information.

For detailed information on housing benefits, please refer to our German website, to page Wohngeld
