Illustrated Accommodation Dictionary

In many languages: information on living in student accommodation

How do you explain the German waste separation to Chinese students? What does "Putzplan" mean in English? Or "Hausmeister" in Arabic?

For some time now, a beautifully illustrated Accommodation Dictionary in English and Chinese has been answering these questions. The Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) had launched it nationwide for all student service organizations. It demonstrates in words and pictures the life in German student accommodation to foreign students: from the Internet access to cooking, partying, washing clothes, and finally, moving out.

Meanwhile, the dictionary has been published in other languages and is available free on the DSW website:

German – English – Chinese
German – French – Spanish
German – French – Arabic
German – Polish – Russian

The 32-page booklet was originally a joint project of University and Studentenwerk Bielefeld, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The first edition, still strongly referring to Bielefeld, appeared in the autumn of 2010.

Smartphone app

The German-Chinese-English edition is also available free of charge as a smartphone app at http://idormdict.de (with the further information referring to the city and universities of Bielefeld).

Similar to the Accommodation Dictionary, the Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) has also published an Illustrated Health Dictionary (German-English).
