Children's Allowance ("Kinderzuschlag")

The federal Children's Allowance for needy families ("Kinderzuschlag"), a maximum of € 170, is intended for parents who can cover their own living demands themselves (from work or assets), but do not have enough income to meet the minimum demands of their children. This support is paid in order to avoid parents having to apply for Unemployment Benefits II or Social Allowance Benefits.

Any income or assets of the child are taken into account, with the exception of child benefits and housing benefits for the child. Housing benefits for the parents are not taken into account when calculating the parents' income.

Anyone receiving Children's Allowance is also eligible for additional benefits for education and participation ("Leistungen für Bildung und Teilhabe") for their children. In general, the Children's Allowance is disbursed to the parent having applied for child benefit (Kindergeld), and it is paid for one child up to the maximum age of 25.

The Children's Allowance must be applied for in writing and separately at the Family Benefits Office (Familienkasse) of the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit—BA). For written application forms, go to your local Family Benefits Office of the Employment Agency or to www.kinderzuschlag.de.

You can find further information on entitlement, types of income not subject to set-off, as well as a Children's Allowance calculator at the "Family Guide" website of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (Familien-Wegweiser des Bundesministeriums für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend) or in the ministry's handout Merkblatt Kinderzuschlag.
