Admission and Language Abilities
Which steps you must take for being admitted to study depends on your educational background and your country of origin. Detailed information on this topic can be found at the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD = German Academic Exchange Service) on the page Admission.
A fundamental requirement for taking up a course of studies in Germany is the knowledge of the language. You will need German as well for you study as in daily life. Even if many people at the universities can speak English: as a rule you can only have real communications in German. The language is the key to integration into daily life. Last but not least, language abilities are very handy when applying for a job. Your future employer will definitely expect you to have acquired a thorough knowledge of the German language during your stay abroad. As you can see: there are many good reasons to learn the language of your host country!
During application you will have to prove your language abilities or pass certain tests respectively. Detailed information can be found at the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) on the page German language examinations for university admission. The Fachsprachenzentrum (FSZ) of the Leibniz University of Hanover (Welfengarten 1, 30167 Hannover, e-mail: sekretariat(at)fsz.uni-hannover.de) offer any language test.
In regard to questions about admission (attendance of a preparatory college, application period, language test etc.) and your stay in Germany the international offices of the universities are pleased to be at your disposal.
