Housing benefit is a federal accommodation allowance, that enables people with a low income to live in an adequate accommodation.

In particular cases students may receive a payment of housing benefit.

Even if they receive Student loan (BAföG), students may get housing benefit if their child is entitled to an accommodation allowance. If this is the case, the share of rent is deducted from student loan (BAföG). However, if the child receives social security and the parents are entitled to student loan (BAföG), it is not possible to get a housing benefit.
