Financing

In the section "Before the Study" on page Financing you were already given important information concerning the financing of studies (need of money, means of financing). Here we want to provide you with further tips and links concerning financing with an emphasis on finding a job and warning you against the wide-spread "debt traps".

Scholarship

Naturally, you can still apply for a scholarship after you have started studying. There are many scholarships which are even reserved for students in their main course of studies. You will find further details in the section "Before the Study" on page Scholarships.

The Student Administration Hanover Supports students coming from families in a financially difficult situation by granting scholarships concerning study contributions according to § 11 NHG.

Loans

Informations about special loans you will find in the section "Before the Study" on "KfW-Studienkredit" and "Niedersachsen-Studienbeitrags-Darlehen" (both pages are in English language).

Working

Please refer to page Working in the section "Before the Study" to check whether and how much you are allowed to work besides your studies, as there are some legal restrictions for international students.

The best address for short- and long-term side jobs is:

City Job – Zeitpersonal- und Studentenvermittlung
(Job Agency for temp-work and students)
of the Agentur für Arbeit Hannover
Limburgstraße 1 (entrance Kleine Packhofstraße), 30169 Hannover
Phone + 49 (0) 511 / 919 - 15 01 or - 15 08
Mo–Thu 8.00–17.00 h
Fr 8.00–14.00 h

Looking up the small ads in the daily press is worthwhile, too. In the internet you can find a range of online-job markets (list at stellenboersen.de). We advise you to apply for the classical student jobs like service at pubs or help at one of Hanover’s fairs. You can offer private lessons via notice on the blackboards of your university. Many companies need students as a temporary help during the semester break. Take the initiative and apply at the corresponding firms in time.

Furthermore there are so called temporary employment agencies ("Zeitarbeitsfirmen"). These agencies "lend" employers to other firms and thereby make a profit. For a side job it can make sense to apply at a temporary employment agency. A personnel leasing agency works according to the same principle. You will find temporary employment agencies in the yellow pages "Gelbe Seiten".

At some universities there are a lot of jobs as student assistants. Such job postings can best be found on the blackboards of the faculties or by asking the student unions or your student council.

For questions concerning employment law, student assistants can address the personnel board, the social department of the student unions or the Hochschulinformationsbüro (HIB = university information office) of the trade unions.

Look Out – Debt Trap!

Students in Germany easily run the risk of becoming indebted. On the one hand because they do as a rule not have much money at their disposal, on the other hand because they are not familiar with some sales practices and offers. That is why we naturally advise our international students as well to visit our homepage in section »Social Advice« and read page Debt Traps thoroughly.

Long-Term Loans within the Graduating Phase

The Student Administration grants long-term loans within the graduating phase to especially needy students who are on the brink of finishing their studies. These loans are interest-free and designed to make it easier for students to do their exams. The amount is geared to the BAföG maximum and so is the assessment of needfulness.

Foreign students are basically entitled to these loans as well.

For further information and procurement regulations please contact the Social Advice Centre of the Student Administration Hanover.

The Students Administration Hanover (Studentenwerk Hannover) supplies and organises social, cultural and health care for the students at Hanover's universities and colleges.
