Studying with a Handicap

The study situation of handicapped and chronically ill students has surely improved within the last years. Still, the universities are far from being free from obstacles. In order to support handicapped people with regard to their studies in Hanover, we provide an overview of groups and institutions giving information and advice:

Guide for Students with Handicaps
In cooperation, the Student Union of Hanover, Selbstbestimmt Leben Hannover e.V. (self-determined life Hanover) and the Social Advice Centre of the Student Administration Hanover produced a guide for handicapped students (which by now has been published in the 2nd edition). Among other things, it gives information about study admission, means of financing and advice centres. Unfortunately, the online-version of the guide is not available at the time being. If you are interested, please contact Selbstbestimmt Leben Hannover e.V. or the Social Advice Centre of the Student Administration Hanover.

Advice Centres
Hanover does not have the best reputation amongst handicapped students, as they often face obstacles that are hard to overcome. Several advice centres offer support in regard to a wide range of problems.

Living Adapted to the Needs of the Disabled at the Student Administration
Living room for people with handicaps must meet special requirements, which are individually adapted to the nature of the respective handicap. The Student Administration Hanover offers places at the dormitories, which are free from obstacles, to disabled students.

Internetguide "Barrierefrei durch Niedersachsen"
(Lower Saxony without obstacles)
This is a travel guide of the state of Lower Saxony for people with handicaps. It contains information concerning communities in Lower Saxony, accommodations and restaurants as well as places of leisure and cultural interest that are free from obstacles.
