Accident Insurance

The students of all universities of Hanover are insured at the statutory accident insurance (GUV). The insurance cover starts with the registration at the university and extends to all action being taken in causal connection to the study. All accidents that take place during courses, work in the library, excursions or activities for the students self-administration, are covered by the insurance. The direct way between university and home is covered as well.

During stays abroad the insurance cover does only work if they take place in connection with the German university. This means that usually only those stays abroad are accepted, that are tutored and organised by the German university. Self-organised stays abroad are generally not covered, even if they are supported by the German university and e.g. regarded as necessary for the finishing of an exam thesis.

The statutory accident insurance usually does not extend to any exam-preparing measures outside university or practical training. Students doing practical training are mostly supported by the accident insurance of the firm or institution they work in. This should be verified before the practical training starts. It should also be made clear, whether the firm or institution will take on any damages a student might cause. If this is not the case, we advise to take out a liability insurance and a temporary professional liability insurance respectively.

If an accident has taken place on the grounds of the university this must be announced immediately at the registration department of the university in question!

You will get further information about the statutory accident insurance at the registration departments, the student secretariats respectively, or directly at the Landesunfallkasse Niedersachsen.
